I grew up in a tiny hamlet called Huallen, with one General Store, one Post Office and a Dance Hall. Our home was known as the Huallen Hilton. No, we didn't have a hotel, just loved entertaining and drop-in visitors were always welcome. My mother could get a bed ready and whip up a 7 course meal in minutes.
I too love to spoil my guests. I have supplies ready for any unannounced visitors who may have forgotten some things at home. It is time to refresh my stock, and what made me think about it was the hospitality services that hotels provide. I hope these tips from my recent hotel trips help you in stocking your guest room and making them feel at home when they come to your home.
An Inviting Bed
White sheets always look crisp, clean and relaxing. Have an extra throw on the bed if they feel cool, or to snuggle up with a book.
Beauty Essentials
Who hasn't forgotten or run out of beauty supplies. Many hotels supply items as these for that very reason. Arrange on a pretty platter or in a basket. Here are some suggestions to include:
ShampooConditionerLotionToothbrush, new & sealed in it's containerTravel ToothpasteDisposable RazorShower CapBubble Bath
Personal Soap
They will really feel pampered if you supply a new bar of hand soap. So much better than using an old sliver with hair stuck to it. My favourite is to give them a bar of homemade oatmeal or lavender soap. They can take it home with them as a gift.
Towels
White towels stacked on their bed, rolled in a basket, or hanging on a rack looks and feels like a spa retreat. I like to give extra so they feel even more spoiled.
Housecoats & Slippers
With flights charging for luggage, we have to pack light. One of the things I leave behind is my housecoat. They will appreciate a robe to snuggle in, and a pair of slippers or cozy warm socks.
Snacks
A bowl of fruit and a couple bottles of water are wonderful additions for those late night hunger pangs.
Office Supplies
I always make use of the notepaper and pens in a hotel. Your guests will appreciate some office supplies such as a notepad, pen, elastics, sticky note pad, paper clips and a highlighter. This is not necessary, just a thoughtful gesture.
Some additional things I like to provide are:
Current copy of their favourite magazineStack of my favourite novels on the bedside tableClock radio so they can set an alarm if need beNight lights in the hallway and bathroom to light the wayEmpty drawers and hangers for their clothesSitting chair and TelevisionFresh Flowers (sometimes)Aromatic Candle
We hope you enjoy your guests as much as we enjoy ours.
