.) Go to a state park. If you're looking for a fun way to get your family out of the house and enjoy some nature together, a state park is a great route to take. The family can see wildlife in its natural habitat and truly enjoy the beautiful sights. Many state parks have various hiking trails, depending on the age of your children can determine which is the right trail for you and your family.
.) Build your outdoor wonderland. Something that was really fun for my family and I was to transform our backyard into an area of complete relaxation. Between the hammock the kids chose and the porch swing we picked out, it really made it that tranquil spot we were trying to create. A few outdoor games later and we have hours of fun outside together, I don't know about your house, but at our house its a challenge to come up with ways to not let the PS3's and WII's take over.
.) Go to your local apple orchard. A trip to the apple orchard is a really great way to get the family outside. Most orchards usually open shortly after Labour Day. Some places offer tours and you can also make a day out of picking some of your favorite apples. Other places offer horse-drawn wagon rides. So pack up your family, and some warm sweaters and a picnic and make a whole day of it!
.) Play some old-fashioned games. Red Rover, Red Rover, Tag, Simon Says, Tug Of War, Jump rope, Charades, Dodgeball, Bobbing for Apples, Capture the Flag... just a few to give you some ideas.
.) Build a basic sandbox. There's no doubt about it, kids love sand. digging, burying, sifting, pouring, smoothing and shaping. Building a sandbox is easy enough you can get the kid's involved in the process.
.) Build a garden together. It is truly amazing to watch how excited the kids will be to get involved with the whole thing. From going to pick out their seeds, getting the soil ready, watching how impatient they are for their plants/flowers or vegetables to grow. But then when it actually happens, its fun to see them bursting with pride at what they have achieved.
These are just a few ideas that really worked for my family. With the daily grind of life and work, school and homework, it's really important to make sure we still set aside that time to stay connected as a family and really enjoy each other... away from all the technology of today.
